Section 1 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 lays the foundation of India’s new criminal law by defining its short title, commencement, and jurisdiction. It extends to all acts committed within India, as well as offences by Indian citizens abroad, crimes on Indian ships and aircraft, and cyber offences targeting India. This section marks the beginning of a modern, globally aware Indian criminal justice framework.
